Full Mouth Reconstruction
Minneapolis and St. Paul Minnesota
Severe dental problems not only cause people social discomfort, they also can cause physical pain due to jaw misalignment. At River Bluff Dental, we are sensitive to peoples concerns and offer full mouth reconstruction to give them a better quality of life.
Reasons for Full Mouth Reconstruction
As opposed to a smile makeover which gives patients the option to obtain the perfect smile they always dreamed of, full mouth reconstruction is often necessary to help patients perform normal daily functions without pain.
Experienced cosmetic dentist Dr. Walter Palmer considers a patient to be a full mouth reconstruction candidate when there are at least 14 teeth to be fixed or if the patient’s dental arch needs to be changed. The patient can have any combination of dental issues, such as:
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Missing teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Undesirably spaced teeth
- Oddly shaped teeth
- Overfilled teeth
- Old crown work
- Chronic tooth, facial or body pain
- Gum disease
- Misaligned jaw joint
Aspects of Full Mouth Reconstruction
Full mouth reconstruction combines smile enhancement techniques with changing the patient’s bite. The first task in full mouth reconstruction is to identify the patient’s optimal jaw placement and work to make the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) stable. Dr. Palmer uses his training and expertise in neuromuscular dentistry to help alleviate the pain associated with TMJ/TMD.
When the patient’s bite is corrected, Dr. Palmer can begin to recommend other cosmetic dental procedures to improve the patient’s overall smile, such as:
- Dental crowns
- Dental bridges
- Porcelain veneers
- Removal and replacement of fillings
- Periodontal care
- Gum recontouring
- Dental implants
- Tooth whitening
Common Questions About Full Mouth Reconstruction
At River Bluff Dental, we understand that making the decision to undergo full mouth reconstruction can be scary. There will undoubtedly be many steps in the process and require a number of different procedures. Some of the most common questions we receive are:
- How much of my teeth will need to be removed?
- Will you remove all of my existing fillings?
- How long will the procedures take?
Because each patient will have his or her own unique set of circumstances, the answers to these questions will vary greatly.
- Some patients will require the removal of seriously decayed teeth. We always strive to salvage as much of the patient’s existing teeth as possible and may use a variety of techniques to cosmetically correct them.
- Many patients have silver amalgam fillings that can be removed and replaced with more natural-looking materials. If the old silver fillings are sufficient, the patient can elect to either have them replaced or keep them as is.
- Different procedures take different amounts of time. Some procedures, such as dental crowns placed using CEREC® 3 technology, can be performed in just one office visit. Conversely, dental implants can take six to 12 months for the entire process to be completed.
