Neuromuscular Dentistry
Many people suffer from headaches, pain in the neck and shoulders, or ringing in their ears. Not many people know that these are symptoms that something could be wrong with your jaw. Clicking and popping in the jaw, jaw pain, and other symptoms may be the result that your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is misaligned.
Nearly nine out of ten people have some misalignment their jaw, and many suffer from a problem known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). This misalignment can be caused by missing or misaligned teeth, or even tooth grinding and clenching.
Neuromuscular dentistry is a field focused on treating problems associated with the TMJ. Dr. Palmer is an experienced neuromuscular dentist who will be able to diagnose and treat symptoms if they are found to be related to TMD. He has received training at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Studies (LVI) to treat patients whose symptoms may have been misdiagnosed.
How Neuromuscular Dentistry Can Help
Dr. Palmer uses state-of-the-art technology, such as a TENS (Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation) unit, to help determine the cause of your symptoms. A TENS unit sends electrical pulses into the face and jaw to help the TMJ to relax. Your symptoms can then be treated through treating your bite to relieve strain on the nerves that make up the TMJ.
Muscle spasms and pain in the jaw, neck and shoulders can be debilitating and affect your quality of life. If you’ve been living with pain, numbness, or other problems with your jaw or extremities, and nothing seems to be relieving them, you should set up a consultation at River Bluff Dental so that we can determine if the problem is related to your TMJ.
