Questions About Tooth Bonding

At River Bluff Dental we can often offer patients more than one way to enhance their smiles. When patients enter our office with one or more teeth they wish to cosmetically enhance or restore to better form and function, Dr. Walter Palmer may suggest tooth bonding as one option.

What is tooth bonding?

Tooth bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that uses a tooth-colored, putty-like composite resin to correct certain types of dental problems and help protect the integrity of your natural tooth. The resin is color-matched and shaped to blend with your other teeth and then bonded with a special light to increase its strength. The restored tooth is buffed and polished to match the rest of your teeth’s natural sheen.

What types of dental issues can teeth bonding correct?

Dr. Palmer can use the tooth bonding process to fix teeth that are:

  • Chipped, cracked or broken
  • Discolored
  • Crooked
  • Undesirably spaced teeth
  • Oddly shaped
  • Decayed

What are the advantages of tooth bonding?

Dental bonding requires that very little tooth enamel be removed to place the composite resin. Most patients do not require anesthesia for the procedure unless a cavity is being filled. Dental bonding can also be less expensive than other dental restorative procedures.

What are the disadvantages of tooth bonding?

Unlike porcelain veneers or crowns, the composite resin used in tooth bonding is not as stain resistant or durable. Some patients experience damage to the bonding materials, such as chips, especially if they continue bad persona habits such as fingernail biting, chewing ice cubes or eating very hard foods.

Teeth bonding can give you a new reason to smile. If you would like to learn more, please contact Dr. Walter Palmer at River Bluff Dental in Bloomington, Minnesota today to schedule a tooth bonding consultation.
